Mean First Passage Time in Periodic Attractors
Abstract. The properties of the mean first passage time in a system characterized by multiple periodic attractors are studied. Using a transformation from a high dimensional space to 1D, the problem is reduced to a stochastic process along the path from the fixed point attractor to a saddle point located between two neighboring attractors. It is found that the time to switch between attractors ...
متن کاملThe mean shape of transition and first-passage paths.
Based on the one-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation in an arbitrary free energy landscape including a general inhomogeneous diffusivity profile, we analytically calculate the mean shape of transition paths and first-passage paths, where the shape of a path is defined as the kinetic profile in the plane spanned by the mean time and the position. The transition path ensemble is the collection of ...
متن کاملFirst passage time distribution in heterogeneity controlled kinetics: going beyond the mean first passage time
The first passage is a generic concept for quantifying when a random quantity such as the position of a diffusing molecule or the value of a stock crosses a preset threshold (target) for the first time. The last decade saw an enlightening series of new results focusing mostly on the so-called mean and global first passage time (MFPT and GFPT, respectively) of such processes. Here we push the un...
متن کاملUniversal equivalence of mean first-passage time and Kramers rate.
We prove that for an arbitrary time-homogeneous stochastic process, Kramers's flux-over-population rate is identical to the inverse of the associated mean first-passage time. In this way the mean first-passage time problem can be treated without making use of the adjoint equation in conjunction with cumbersome boundary conditions.
متن کاملMean first passage time for fission potentials having structure
A schematic model of over-damped motion is presented which permits one to calculate the mean first passage time for nuclear fission. Its asymptotic value may exceed considerably the lifetime suggested by Kramers rate formula, which applies only to very special, favorable potentials and temperatures. The additional time obtained in the more general case is seen to allow for a considerable increm...
